The Four Futures Framework
Which line do you want to be on two years from now?
Two years from today, your life will sit on one of four lines. The Four Futures Framework puts all four on a single page, so you can see where each one leads before you choose.

What do the four colors say about where you are headed?
The four futures framework begins at Today’s Date and runs along a time axis to 2 years from now. The lines fan out from there and end in four colors, and each color describes a different future.
Line 1 · Dark green
Ideal
Decisions acted on produce this future. The line begins close to the center and climbs, gently at first and then steeply. A green check and the word MEMORABLE mark it as a future worth remembering. The monthly prompt that feeds it is “Masterwork Decisions I Will Act On This Month.”
Line 2 · Light green
Okay
Things improve a little without a decision behind them. The line rises gently and stays near the center, and the word Fair sits beside it. Life feels fine, so a choice does not feel urgent.
Line 3 · Yellow
Poor
Things slip a little without a decision behind them. The line sags below the center, and the word Mediocre sits beside it. In the early months it looks nearly identical to line 2.
Line 4 · Red
Disaster
Drift left unaddressed compounds. The line falls slowly at first, then drops steeply and ends at a red X. The monthly prompt for this side is “Drift Issues to be Fixed/Addressed This Month.”
Why do two of the four futures look the same for months?
Lines 2 and 3 stay within a point or two of the center line. In the early months, a small gain and a small slip both feel like standing still. Ideal and Disaster begin close to that same spot, so all four futures look alike at the start.
The gap opens late. On a scale from +5 to -5, the Ideal and Disaster lines finish roughly nine points apart after twelve months. By then, the months that looked alike have produced very different lives.
What happens to the four futures while you wait?
Waiting is a decision, and it has a time frame. The Four Futures Framework asks one direct prompt: How long are you prepared to wait?
Acting early means you jump lines, ride the curve, and accelerate. Acting later can reach Ideal along a path that is riskier and harder. Meanwhile, the Okay and Poor lines stay comfortable enough to keep you where you are.
How do you use the four futures framework?
- Write today’s date in the first box and the date two years from now in the last.
- On the three blank lines beside each future, describe what that future looks like in your days, your relationships, and your contribution.
- Circle the line number you want to be on.
- Each month, list the decisions you will act on and the drift issues you will fix or address.
